What is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr (or Eid ul-Fitr) is an Islamic holiday celebrating the end of Ramadan, a month-long period of fasting.

When is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr (Eid) begins as soon as the crescent of the new moon appears in the sky. The exact date is determined by astronomical calculation and varies per location, or is based on actual observation of the moon – then Eid is celebrated the next day. In 2024, Eid will probably fall on Wednesday, April 10th.

Celebrating Eid

The Eid celebration begins early in the morning. People dress in their most festive outfits to attend prayers at the mosque. There they pray and congratulate each other on the end of Ramadan, greeting one another with “Eid Mubarak” (blessed celebration).

After the service, the celebration really gets started and relatives gather together, bringing special food with them. Cookies and sweets are an important part of the festivities and children receive money or gifts.

A great way to add an extra touch to celebrating the end of Ramadan is to draw names for a Secret Eid gift exchange.
